The Island Collection is David Smiths most recent project, and as those of us who are familiar with his work have come to expect, it displays a level of virtuosity in composition and execution that is quite stunning.

The title "the Island Collection" is self explanatory. Each unique piece is a stylised & atmospheric representation of the small offshore islands scattered across the world's oceans.

The apparent random simplicity of design belies the involved nature of the production. Only from many years of familiarity with his chosen media of glass, gold & translucent paint is the artist free to express himself in this spontaneous manner.

The true beauty of these pieces cannot be fully appreciated from photographs. As one enters the studio or gallery where they are displayed their impact is immediate, as the light reflects and dances on deeply carved or kiln-formed glass, shimmering with various tones of gold, afloat in a limpid pool of rich, subtly blended colour.

When viewed from different vantage points the changing light highlights new aspects of the design, bringing the whole to life.

Dave Smith's "Island Collection" has received the acclaim of his peers, galleries and collectors of art, and sales have been brisk as clients eagerly acquire this new work with the same voracious appetite as his other projects.

Some of the collection could recently be seen on show at the "Grand Designs" Exhibition, Canary Wharf in London.
